How do you classify board games

When you play board games you generally do not think of the various kinds and classification of these board games. Infact when you play tabletop games you should know that these refer to card games in addition to board games, miniature wargames as well as dice games and games that are tile based. The reason why these are called tabletop games are due to the fact that these games are different from video, online board games or sports games. These are also called tabletop games as they need to also be differed from video games that are role playing ones. These tabletop games are also referred to as hobby games.

There are different kinds and categories of these tabletop games. These are :
a)   Adventure games which are like adventure gamebooks as well as adventure board games.
b)   Board games are like Chess, Go, Backgammon and several others
c)   Card games are those like Tarot card games, card solitaire and other collectible card games
d)   Dice games are those like craps, poker dice, zombie dice, bunco and others
e)   Paper and pencil games are those like dots and boxes, hangman, connect 5, battleships, Sudoku and others
f)    There are role playing games such as dungeons and dragons, call of cthulhu and other fantasy roleplay
g)   Strategy games are like government simulation ones, board wargames as well as miniature wargames
h)   There are tile based ones such as anagrams, tangrams, 15 puzzle, mahjong and other such games.

There are classifications of games which are as per equipment and these can also be classified based on the kind of chance which is involved. Chance is either due to the uncertainty of the outcome. These are called stochastic games. For example the roll of the dice or which cards will be dealt. The other kind is chance as a result of uncertainty based on the position of the opponent or the cards which are not yet visible. These are called deterministic games.

Most of the board games are multiplayer board games though some may involve a single player.

The reason why people prefer multiplayer board games is that it helps to increase social interaction and it helps to connect people. These are also used as a kind of icebreaker when played among people who barely know each other or are awkward as they do not know how to go ahead with the conversation.
